8 Basic Hair Care Tips That You Should Know

1. Avoid hot showers - Rinse your hair with cold water

I love taking hot showers, I mean who doesn't? ;) Hot shower feels especially good during rainy days or chilly weather. Although hot water dries out our skin and hair, warm water does help to open a hair's cuticle to allow shampoo and conditioner to do penetrate better. For those who love hot showers, like me, just remember to rinse your hair with cold water at the end. Cold water helps to close the cuticle and seal in moisture from the conditioner, which will make your hair look shinier and healthier.

2. Shampoo your scalp, not your ends

I think many people have the misconception that by 'spamming' a huge amount of shampoo, it will be cleaner. It's not about how much shampoo you use, but where you apply it. The volume of shampoo you should use depends on the length and thickness of your hair. Very important to remember that you need to wash your hair thoroughly and not leave any residue behind.

When washing your hair, try to focus and shampoo your scalp instead on the ends of your hair. The shampoo will eventually rinse down in the shower, therefore cleaning your scalp thoroughly is important. Also, when cleaning your scalp, remember not to use your fingernails to scratch it as it will hurt and injured your scalp. Use your base of your fingers to shampoo it.

3. Don’t apply conditioner on your scalp

I remember one of my friends told me that she had a friend that applied conditioner on her scalp and because of that, she ended losing a lot of hair. Try not to put conditioner on the scalp or near your roots, because that can cause your scalp to get greasy faster. For conditioner it should be on your hair, not your scalp.

4. Massage regularly for a healthy scalp

It's always good to give your head a revitalising massage as you shampoo because it would encourage blood circulation and helps to detoxify the scalp. A lot of people take extra care on their hair but the scalp is as important, if not, more important as it will affect the condition of your hair. Therefore, if you can, try to massage it while shampooing to get the circulation going. For those who are lazy to do so, your solution will be on #8.

5. Wash at least 2 times when putting on hair wax/gel/spray

For guys who always wax, gel or uses hairspray on their hair, sometimes washing it 2 times would be good because it might not be totally clean even after the first wash. If you're not being able to shampoo into a rich lather, it is a good sign that you need to rinse and repeat again.

As you all know that the most important reason for hair loss is dandruff and itchy scalp. Therefore, maintain good cleanliness is important!

6. Let hair dry naturally

Well, only if you can. I understand that it might be easier for guys to dry our hair naturally because most of us have shorter hair as compared to the ladies. So for the ladies, a great tip is to try not to blow-dry your hair immediately after shampooing. What you could do is to allow your hair to dry under a towel turban instead, for at least 10-15 mins. When drying your hair with hairdryer, try to use the lowest temperature setting, although I understand that it will take forever for some of you, but... if you are not rushing for time, why not?

7. Have proper and enough sleep & lead a healthy lifestyle

I know you must be thinking that, oh this again? But it's really one of the important factors that will affect the condition of your scalp and hair. Eat healthy, eat a balanced diet rich in lean protein, whole grains, fruits and vegetables (since hair is made of proteins). Drink lots of water and with the new diet, you will see the difference with your hair that is newly growing.

Stress will also greatly affect your hair. It can cause serious hair loss or hair problems. Try to release your stress through activities that you like to do (sports, shopping, etc.) and relax your mind and body once in a while.

8. Hair care and treatment by professionals

Lazy? Too busy? I understand, since many of us are working adults now and we usually do not have so much time on hand to take care of our hair and such. For all the busy bees, having your hair taken hair by the professionals might be a good option. I've been going to Beijing 101 for my hair treatment because I do have dandruff issues (read my entry about it here).
